Beginning in the 1970's, visual artists pioneered Jersey City and created a contemporary cultural community. We sit on the shoulders of the artists and arts organizers in this area who preceded us.
There are not enough critical reviews being written about visual art in NJ. We started this blog in 2017, and asked artists to activate a different part of their creative practice by writing reviews of fellow artist's exhibitions. After all, an art community thrives on the generosity and support of the artists in it. Artists have been happy to do it and the reviews we publish help spread the word about the good work professional artists living in NJ are making.
During the pandemic, Nieuw Art Blog was on pause. Beginning in September, 2022, we came back and resumed our focus on reviews of Drawing Rooms exhibitions, projects and programs. Beginning October, 2023, we decided to expand our focus to include solo/two person shows by professional artists living in NJ.
This blog, like many others, is a volunteer effort.
